The Deseret Record

Restoring the Pure Language to the Paternal Remnant

If you have spent any time in the Restoration tradition โ€” LDS, RLDS, independent, or otherwise โ€” you have probably noticed that certain words have stopped working. "God" means three different things depending on who is speaking it. "Faith" has been so thoroughly domesticated by the institutional sermon that it can no longer carry the operational weight Joseph assigned to it. "Priesthood" has become a career track rather than a jurisdiction of intelligence. The words are still there. The doctrine they were supposed to transmit is mostly gone.

This is not an accident of history. It is the predictable consequence of using an ambiguous writing system to transmit precise doctrine. English orthography allows the same sequence of letters to carry contradictory meanings across generations. The institutional church did not have to edit Joseph's revelations directly โ€” the language itself was permeable enough that the revision happened through ordinary usage, over decades, without anyone being dishonest.

The Deseret Alphabet was given to the School of the Prophets as a response to this problem โ€” not as a curiosity, and not as a historical artefact. It is a precision instrument. What follows is an explanation of what it does, how it works, and what begins to change in the mind of an apprentice who starts to use it.

The Prophetic Mandate

For then will I turn to the people a pure language,

that they may all call upon the name of the Elohim,

to serve Him with one consent.

Zephaniah 3:9 (JST)

The Physics of the Word

In the High Restoration, we recognize that the confusion of tongues (Genesis 11:7 JST) was not merely a change of vocabulary, but a fracturing of Ahmanite Intelligence. When language is no longer phonetic, the apprentice spends energy resolving contradictions between the Visual Sign and the Vocal Spirit.

The Deseret Alphabet is a sovereign filter. By ensuring that one sign represents exactly one vibration, we organize the "matter" of language into a House of Order. This is the script of the 1879 Record โ€” a technology that protects the School of the Prophets from the drift of sectarian terminology.

Consider the English word "God." Four of the most contested syllables in the history of Western civilisation, and the letters tell you nothing about which God is meant. The Nicene God โ€” immaterial, three-in-one, without body parts or passions โ€” and the God of Joseph Smith โ€” embodied, exalted, the Father of our race โ€” are written identically in English. Every reader brings their prior theology to the word and finds it confirmed. The ambiguity is not a bug in the language; it is the mechanism by which theological revision operates without anyone noticing.

In the 1879 Record, when we write ๐‚๐‘‹๐ฒ๐‘Œ โ€” Ahman โ€” we are not writing a word that can mean anything a reader brings to it. We are writing the specific name of the specific being: Michael-Adam, the Father of our race, as Joseph named him in D&C 78. The character encodes the sound. The sound encodes the name. The name encodes the doctrine. There is no space in the chain for institutional revision to enter quietly.

What Happens When You Begin

Most apprentices who begin writing in Deseret report the same initial experience: it is slow, and the slowness is the point. English is so automatic that we can read institutional theology for decades without registering what it is actually saying. When you write a sentence in Deseret, you must sound out every word. You cannot skim. The phonetic discipline forces a level of attention to the exact shape of doctrine that silent English reading rarely requires.

The second thing that happens is that the Paternal terminology begins to feel native rather than technical. Writing ๐‘…๐ฒ๐‘Œ ๐‚๐‘‹๐ฒ๐‘Œ โ€” Son Ahman โ€” fifty times does something to the mind that reading the phrase "Jesus Christ" in an English text does not. The name becomes precise. The being named becomes distinct. The doctrine attached to the name becomes harder to accidentally substitute with the institutional version.

The vowel chart to the right is the entry point. The full alphabet has 38 characters โ€” 12 vowels and 26 consonants. Begin with the vowels. When you can read and write the 12 vocalic characters without reference, move to the consonants. The translation progress below reflects the current state of the 1879 Record in Deseret โ€” the texts that the School studies in the Pure Language as the standard against which all English translations are audited.

THE COMPLETE ALPHABET

Consonant Key โ€” The 26 Consonants

The 26 consonants of the Deseret Alphabet are arranged by phonetic category โ€” the same system used in modern linguistics to classify sounds by where and how they are produced in the mouth and throat. This was not accidental. The alphabet's designers understood that English spelling is arbitrary: the same letter can represent multiple sounds, and the same sound can be rendered by multiple letter combinations. Deseret fixes this. Each of these 26 characters represents exactly one sound, in every context, without exception. When you know these alongside the 12 vowels, you can read and write any word in the English language with perfect phonetic precision โ€” including every word of doctrine in the 1879 Record.
